Venue: Mt. Pleasant, Arthur Ravenel Bridge and Historic Charleston, S.C. The viewing area encompasses a 6.2 mile course, with a start line in Mt. Pleasant and finish line at Marion Square, historic Charleston.
Although this event includes close to 40,000 amateur runners and walkers from all 50 states, it is truly a professional sports event where world class competitive runners take home the prize money. First place winner receives $5,000 and some 20 other checks are awarded for other accomplishments. Course record to-date is 27:40 (M) and 31:19 (F). The event is one of the world’s largest 10,000 meter runs, sanctioned by USA Track and Field, and has had many notable runners in the past.*

- Elite United States national runner Benji Durden, whose opportunity to make the Olympic team was denied by President Jimmy Carter in 1980, won the first run.
- 1972 Olympic Marathon champion Frank Shorter competed in the 1983 Bridge Run.
- In 1989, world-renowned Norwegian marathoner Grete Waitz, 2nd in the inaugural Olympic marathon and former NYC winner, won the women’s division.
- The 1994 Bridge Run gained fame for a runner who ran under a pseudonym. TV personality Oprah Winfrey finished 3,839th with a time of 55:48.
- Actor Bill Murray fired the cannon for the 1997 Bridge Run and then ran the event.
- Kenyan Olympic runner Catherine Ndereba, second in the 2004 Marathon in Athens, won 3 consecutive years, 2000-2002.
- South African Olympic runner Elana Meyer, who finished 2nd in women’s 10,000 meters in Barcelona in 1992, won the 1997 and 1998 event.

2007 Singles Champion: Jelena Jankovic def. Dinara Safina 6-2, 6-2
With the Tier I Family Circle Cup trophy in hand, Jankovic notched the third and most impressive Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title of her career. She improved to a 3-5 lifetime record in singles finals, and rose from No. 9 to a new career-high of World No. 7 with this victory, and also became the first female from Serbia to surpass $2 million in career prize money earnings. Jankovic collected her first Tier I event along with a check for $196,900.

The Family Circle Tennis Center was transformed into beach front property with more than 1,500 tons of sand and played host to 150 of the best beach volleyball players in the world during the 1st annual AVP Charleston Open (June 14-17, 2007). Over 12,000 fans witnessed breathtaking action and enjoyed the festive “beach party” atmosphere offered by all AVP events. Gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh were crowned women’s champions while Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger conquered the men’s field of talented athletes. Kiawah Island Golf Resort will test the strongest field in golf when it hosts the 94th PGA Championship in August 2012.
