Charleston Harbor Fest 2009 features
Tall Ships from around the globe.
Charleston is one of only two U.S. cities
chosen as an official port for the Tall
Ships Atlantic Challenge series. The
route of this race starts in Spain, travels
to the Canary Islands, Bermuda,
Charleston, Boston, Halifax and finally to
a finish in Belfast. These majestic ships
with their traditional rigging and classic
lines make for quite the visual as they
converge in the harbor. In addition to the competition on the water, this event
brings with it a huge cultural exchange
between nations and some of the world’s
most famous ships. The competition
continues on land as part of Harbor Fest
includes pitting the crew of each ship
against each other in a variety of games
such as soccer, tug-o-war, and more.
Some of the largest ships have a crew
of more than 300 Naval cadets.
ALL ACCESS Insiders’ View
Charleston Harbor Fest offers the unique chance to board the
ships and have a close look at their beauty. For the adventure
enthusiast, there will also be opportunities to join the crew and
sail onboard from Charleston to Boston (fee applies and varies per
vessel). In addition to harbor tours and free sailing, land-based
activities during Harbor Fest include an extensive children’s area,
education village with conservation exhibits, family boat building,
classic boat display, and an Old Charlestowne living history exhibit
with pirates. Patriots Point will offer modern attractions such as
helicopter rides, aerobatic flight demos, modern military exhibits,
and of course the USS Yorktown. Proceeds from this event support
educational programs onboard the Spirit of South Carolina tall ship.
General admission to festival grounds is free to the public.
